How can I get a SIM card in Sri Lanka?
Walk into any of the branches or authorised dealers of one of the GSM service providers mentioned on this page to purchase a SIM (Subscriber Identity Module) card. Branches are available throughout the island for your convenience. A prepaid SIM card is the most economical solution for visitors to Sri Lanka, as you do not have to pay any commitment fee or sign a contract. When purchasing a SIM card make sure that your mobile phone is compatible with GSM standards, else you could purchase a GSM compatible phone from any GSM service provider branch or  mobile phone shop. Once you have purchased a SIM, you can make local and international calls, send text messages and use the services provided by the service provider. Most SIM cards come with a certain amount of free talk time;  you can purchase phone credit from any of the branches or any communication centre. You can recharge your account by purchasing a prepaid recharge card or by reloading your phone by giving your number and paying the required amount to the cashier. Prepaid recharge cards are usually available in denominations of Rs. 100, Rs. 400 and Rs. 1000.
