Sri Lanka & The Netherlands : Old Friends, New Trends

The Sri Lankan Ambassador to the Netherlands,Adam M.J. Sadiq hosted a lunch in honour of the Dutch Ambassador to Sri Lanka,Her Excellency Joanne Doornewaard at Lak Medura, the Official Residence in the Hague on Monday,11th January 2016.

Coincidentally, both envoys had assumed duties in their respective posts around the same time,in August last year. The luncheon event was their first meeting, which was made all the more memorable, being graced by Ambassador Doornewaard's predecessor, Loius Piet, currently Economic Adviser in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, along with his wife, Dyonne, as well as senior Foreign Ministry officials, namely, Dr Peter Potman, Director of the Asia & Oceania Department and Mr Sander Janssen, Head of the Host Nation Division,and also senior executives from the banking and corporate sectors, including Rabobank, Ballast Nedam, Amvest and Remit Consulting.

Both Ambassadors agreed to cooperate closely with each other to further enhance and deepen the existing warm and cordial relations between Sri Lanka and the Netherlands.

First  Anniversary  of  the  President’s  Inauguration  in  Office

In  accordance  with  the  Cabinet  decision  of   09th  December  2015  in  relation  to  above,  the  Embassy of  Sri  Lanka  in  The  Netherlands  conducted  a  special  programme  on 08th  January 2016  with the  participation  of   all  members  of  the  staff,  to  mark  the  first  anniversary  of  H.E.  the  President’s  inauguration  in  office  following  the   Presidential  Election  held  on 08th January  2015.

 

Speaking  on  the  occasion,   H.E.  the  Ambassador  recalled  the  Presidential  Election  held  on  08th January  2015 ,  which  brought  about  significant  transformation  to  the  political  landscape  in  Sri  Lanka,  restoring  its  long  eroded  democratic  values  with  the  aim  of  establishing    good  governance,  law  and  order  and  human  rights.

 

Noting  the  transparent  and  fair  manner  which  the  Presidential  Election  was  held   and  the  peaceful  and  smooth  transfer  of  power to  the  new  regime,  H.E.  the  Ambassador  briefed  the  staff  about  the  democratic  and  non-violent  political  culture  that    prevails  in  the    country  under  the  present  National   Government. 

 

In  conclusion,  he  urged  all   members  of  the  staff to  discharge  their  duties  honestly,  diligently  and  in  a  responsible manner  as  public  servants   are  duty  bound  to  serve people  who  exercised  their  franchise   year  ago  for   the  establishment  of  a  new  political  culture.
